Bangkok Veterans League Season #4, Event #23 — Annual Traditional Friendly Derby Match — • 2nd Annual "Bangkok Veterans -vs- Bangkok Francophones" • 30/Nov/2008 • Patana School
Francophones take back the title in a hard-earned bout
The Bangkok Veterans returned to their annual friendly against the Bangkok Francophones, knowing that it will be extra difficult, especially with the France-45 squad's recent championship in the inaugural Veterans World Cup a few weeks before.
A quick e-mail went out to all the Vets on the VetsLeague mailing group, and we had another talented squad in a flash once again: • Veterans League
- Eralp (M) • British Club
- Wayne (C)
- Martin • Eton Rifles
- Peter • Campioni Italians
- Aldo • LeCoq French
- Keith (as an Englishman, had to play for the Veterans ) • BSL Veterans
- Eric • Anatolian Turks:
Due to the political troubles in Thailand, it was a signature joint team effort to find a replacement venue just 1 day before the epic match, to move away from Harrow School, which was too close to yellow-shirted People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) who occupied Don Muang airport, and avoid risk to the safety of the guys who were going to participate (Both teams also had players stuck overseas due to Thailand's closed airports, Suvarnapum and Don Muang, during the same weekend).
By "joint team effort", I mean:
Eralp sent out an email warning of troubles.
Dominique recommended to change.
Marc found an available pitch at Patana School.
Jerome took a photo of the Sunday schedule with his Blackberry, and emailed to Eralp instantly.
Eralp contacted Steve (of Patana) requesting a pitch.
Steve Ok'ed it.
Eralp SMS'ed mobile phones and emailed to the VetsLeague mailing group informing of the change.
Luckily, in the end, it all worked out. Everyone on both teams showed up at the right venue and at the right time, and therefore the Bangkok Veterans did not miss this year's annual traditional friendly derby match with Bangkok Francophones.
All because of the wonders of the 21st Century Cyberspace!
We knew this was going to be a challenging game, so we opted to go with our usual defensive 4-1-3-2 formation
The Starting-11 was decided as follows:
After the initial pleasantries, handshakes and photo-shoots, Period-1 started out as mostly a midfield battle, both teams simply testing each other in the opening exchanges.
Toward the middle of the period, things started heating up, and Francophones's 2 agile strikers, Eric and Jerome began creating real chances. On the left wing, Eric moved down the ball, passed to Jerome who swiftly cut the ball into the 6-yard-box to Gonzague who tapped it in for an easy one. But, Linesman's flag was already up, signalling the offside, and the Referee duly obliged and called off the goal — to everyone's bafflement!
Still, the "Vets Spirit" prevailed, and no arguments from either side.
On the return attack, on a Wayne and Yilmaz combination, Yilmaz's powerful long range shot got deflected back from the crossbar to Wayne who bungled the easy sitter in close range.
Towards the end of the period, from a strong kick from Fabrice, Darren barely reached out to tip it over, only for the ball to hit the crossbar, bounce back to hit Darren's head, and go in for a fluke goal. [Score: 0-1]
In the very last attack of the period, Yilmaz broke through the Francophones defence again and finished with another strong shot, only to see the ball bounce back from the left post to Keith this time, who also bungled the easy sitter in close range as well!
• First Break ==> Veterans 0 - 1 Francophones
Beginning of Period-2 was also a cagey affair, the ball mostly going up-&-down on both ends. In the general flow of the game, the Veterans lost their concentration and their formation, giving away the ball too easily, while the Francophones continued to play as a compact unit, getting all their sides and quarters working well.
Towards the end of the period, the Francophones were really working both wings well, and found acres of space to move the ball. In one of those attacks, they brought the ball from the right side, and passed into the penalty-box, where all Fabrice had to do was to pick the side of the goal to slot it in. He chose the left side. [Score: 0-2]
• Second Break ==> Veterans 0 - 2 Francophones
The second break talk in the Veterans camp was a serious and poignant one, openly pointing all those that were going wrong.
Period-3 started much the same as previous periods, where the Francophones, through Huberto's dancing feet in the midfield, were using both the right wing (with Gonzague and Fabrice) and the left wing (with Jerome and Eric), constantly getting the precisely placed feeds.
But, the Veterans finally found their rhythm by the middle of the period, and started pressuring Francophones's wings. Wayne on the right, Guy on the left, and Yilmaz, Eric and Fraser through the middle, the Veterans were determined to get on the scoreboard.
Added to that, Darren (from center-back) and Keith (from right-back) joined the fray, making it a 7-men forward line, leaving Eralp tending the center-circle haplessly. On one of those strong attacks, Guy found his way through Philippe and Dominique on the left wing, and coolly slotted the ball into the inside net with a low shot. [Score: 1-2]
In the remaining minutes of the match, both sides worked hard to change the scoreline — to no avail.
And, the final whistle from Kh. Sakorn sealed the final score, which indicated change of hands of this annual traditional friendly derby's Permanent Cup.
• Full Time ==> Veterans 1 - 2 Francophones
Oh, yes, we did have a 4th period, where we presented the trophies, and quickly consumed the available beers on hand. We even sent Wayne and Aldo to get us more beers (from miles away, we're told!).
Simply determining from the numbers of last ones to leave, Francophones won the 4th Period challenge as well:
• Veterans: 3 (Aldo, Eralp, Wayne)
• Francophones: 4 (Dominique, Olivier, Vincent, Laurent)
And, this is despite the piercing giant mosquitos .
Great day to keep in memories for a long time to come!
Again, thanks to Dominique and the Francophones for accepting our invitation to continue this annual traditional friendly.
Eagerly looking forward to the 2010 edition.

EG can you translate this one too, that's for Peter-Pierre-Pedro Rodger's wife?
Cheers to all,
P2 = Pitou, pour les amis = Monsieur Le Capitaine, Dominique

Equlibre match well, uh, after lunch beautiful spring terrain excellent, impeccable arbitration, beer served fresh and 2 spectators feminines (element essential to shine Cocks).
That it lacked? Even some friends, Graham, Roland, Ben, Derek, . . .
1st third time the blues start the match without too tiring; 1-0 after 10 minutes, nothing unusual; Fabrice sent a missile which plays pinball between the goalkeeper and his bar, and it falls; Keith's tour has tried to launch a missile and play pinball, too, but he lost control and Keith is back in the goals . . . without the ball and instead it has been a weapon of deterrence, it will never-before center at Le Coq, this time decide it is!
2nd third time: change of guard in blue . . . P2 put gloves, everyone breathes; blues continue to control the match without too tiring and Fabrice deliver a 2nd potato; good, he should know that Fabrice was Starting in China that morning, we sent a message of thanks to CSA and evening there was a Mexican home Fabrice Hola! it is also our reinforcements arrived from Cameroon and Canada; without them it was most Francophones, but France, and EG took this excuse to cancel the match
3rd third time: it always starts with little tired, a new change of guard in blue and it becomes delicate, and the defense plays in front of and behind the forwards play; Eric (not the French, not at all elsewhere, but rather the Belgian Flemish) sent his chance and kills Francophones; how do you reconcile the Belgian way?
Man of the match Vetsleague symbol: j'hésite between No. 22, Kaka, he was everywhere, and Bruce for his outstanding issue in cages in the bottom third time; symbol Francophones, Fabrice had its disaster and scorer of the Man of the match is . . . . . Ludo for his excellent performance behind and in the middle
3rd half-time, finally it is the 4th; feminines our fans we are a party not possible, even comparing me a Charles Aznavour! I asked if she knows Gainsbourg?
EG can you translate this one too, that's for Peter-stone-pedro Rodger's wife?
The ends after twelve o'clock, and watch Japanese Cocks play football as cats, sipping cold beer served by Wayne (thank you my guy, I serve you a glass of wine next time!).
Once again, they were taken!
They think we have to participate, but we have to win and we won the disasters that clutter my apartment!
Evidemmment, I'm kidding, what we won yesterday it is still some new friends or meeting reviewed and those who are happy to run like a balloon behind us, though, with many believing there's a lot more interesting Bangkok has done a Sunday after noon but my wife!
Then, yesterday, yet, once we have a EG say: Well done and thank you.
In friends, I had forgotten Christophe traveling between Had Yai and Bangkok, final step to returning home to Shanghai! and Gilles unfortunately hurts
Wayne, another beer if you please!
Cheers to all,
